I am going to culinary school next year... I am really passionate about cooking and I really want to be a chef but I really do not know that many recipes and herbs, spices, and rules and stuff.... What should I do??? Where can I Volunteer?Advice for a teen who wants to be a chef?
Don't volunteer. You can get paid while learning if you are willing to sub in for cooks who call in sick or go on vacation. Fill out some applications.
Cook every recipe in the book The Joy Of Cooking and you will be a pro. It is excellent training..Advice for a teen who wants to be a chef?
Never mind volunteering. There's plenty of time to get exposed to the various items.
Master the techniques, especially knife techniques.
Your library should include these three reference books:
- Larousse's Gastronomique
- Professional Chef (from the Culinary Institute of America)
- Techniques by Jacques Pepin
Experiment with ingredients, being mindful of modern cooking temperatures and tastes.
When you've finished your culinary school training, do internships under the teaching of great chefs (not necessarily famous ones).
